Burnout took a lot from me. But one thing it gave back was a long list of things I genuinely stopped caring about.

I don’t need to accomplish five things before 9am to have a good day. I don’t want a life that looks impressive on paper and feels miserable in practice. I don’t say yes to every opportunity anymore, because a good opportunity isn’t automatically a good opportunity right now. I skip the workout when my body is clearly asking for rest. I stopped keeping up with people out of obligation, because I don’t want my relationships to feel like another item on a to-do list. And not every season of my life has to be a season of growth. Sometimes things can just be good.

None of this means I stopped being ambitious. It means I got a lot more selective about what I spend my energy on.

For a lot of high achievers, recovery isn’t only about adding new habits. It’s about letting go of the standards that were quietly running your life, the ones you never actually chose.

Save this if you’re ready to stop caring about a few things too.

"Sometimes things can just be good" deserves to be read twice. Letting go of standards nobody actually chose sounds like such a quiet kind of freedom 🍃 Say hello at @kindscrollsupport 💛

I constantly have a dilemma with #5. Working out and fitness have been an integral part of who I am for over 10 years. I’m AuDHD and autistic burnout didn’t show up symptomatically until this last year. That has meant skipping a day or even a week of structured workouts every other month or so. I like streaks in general and one of my proudest ones is a working out streak. I hear “just do it even if you are fighting it. You’ll thank yourself later” but if I do this I relapse hard. Maybe that’s good advice for people who can handle nonstop stimulation and social demands every day and still have some gas in the tank at the end. I’m not kidding when I say that there are days when social demand at work and social masking (especially masking) leave me sore (?)
