Theo sat on the bench long after the game. His team was already planning next Saturday.

“Your teammates may have moved on from the dropped catch well before you have.”

You keep replaying the mistake: the ball that slipped, the word that came out wrong. Meanwhile everyone else has already moved on to the next play.

The people around you are usually kinder about your mistakes than you are. Let yourself catch up with them.

A familiar opening in meetings, classrooms and community halls: “This is probably a silly question, but…”

The words can arrive before you have had time to think about them. Underneath may be a straightforward request: the deadline, the meaning of an abbreviation or what happens at step three.

A clear answer lets you join in with a little more information. That is a reasonable thing to want, whether you have been there a week or a year.

There is room to ask the question in a plain voice, without deciding its worth in advance.

Try a softer place to scroll. A few kind words, a thought to take with you, then back to your day.

At work, it’s easy to become known for what people can count on you to do.

You notice who needs help. You make time for the question. You bring the extra coffee. And because you do these things so naturally, people may not think to ask how you’re doing.

Being dependable doesn’t mean you never need support. Sometimes it means your tiredness is easier to miss.

A kind message won’t finish someone’s workload or solve what’s waiting for them at home. But it can be a moment when they feel noticed as a person, beyond what they get done.

That small look up. The smile across the room. Nothing needs explaining, and for a moment, someone feels a little less alone.

Who quietly makes your working day easier—and when did you last let them know? 🌿

Lavender's basil drooped after a busy week. By evening, it was standing up again.

“Forgetting to water for a week does not make you someone who cannot grow things.”

One slip doesn't define you. Missing a week, a habit, a promise to yourself: it's easy to turn that into a story about who you are.

But plants, like people, are forgiving. A little water, a little care, and things lift again. So can you.

Help at work often has a clear start and a blurry finish.

Someone reviews your draft, introduces you to the right person, or stays back to sort out a report that will not print. You thank them in the moment. Then the result arrives days or weeks later, and by then the helper has moved on to other things.

A short follow-up closes that gap. “The proposal went through, and the budget section you tightened was the part they asked about.” It is specific, it is brief, and it shows the helper what their effort actually did.

It also gives them something useful: a clearer picture of where their skills make a difference.

Whose help from last month could you follow up on this week?

Theo's drawing didn't turn out. Lavender put a bowl of noodles in front of him first.

“A small setback can look larger before a meal than it does once you have eaten.”

When you're tired and hungry, a small problem can feel like proof that everything is going wrong.

Before you decide how bad it is, look after the basics. Eat something warm. Sit down. Often the problem shrinks back to its real size.

A guide covering someone else's walking tour might have put the old market before the harbour, not after. The route is set, the group has booked it, and the stories still need telling well.

Taking a plan seriously when it is not yours can be a small act of trust in a colleague you may never meet.

Three doors down, a grey cat has taken up position in the front window like a supervisor at the start of a shift.

It notes the delivery van. It notes the kid dragging a scooter home. It notes you, briefly, and decides you may continue.

You walk on feeling faintly inspected, and oddly pleased about it.

The shade crept right across the lawn. The radio drifted on to a different programme. You looked up from the garden bed with no idea how long you had been out there.

That small moment of surprise is worth savouring. For a while, the hour held you rather than the other way round.

What were you doing the last time an afternoon slipped by like that?
