Today the racing industry will tell you how much they love their horses. But this footage recently released by @farmtransparencyproject once again shows us otherwise. The investigation, captured in a town in my electorate, found a โ€œhorse dealerโ€ killing ex-racehorses. Horses are chased and shot โ€” some multiple times before they die. And then their bodies are sent off to become pet food. Some of these horses had won tens of thousands of dollars. But once their racing days were over, this is still how their lives ended. Thousands of horses are bred by the racing industry every single year. Many of them donโ€™t make the cut. The names are only known of the winners, while the losers are easy to hide. And despite footage like this being exposed over and over again โ€” one of the wealthiest industries in our state which continues to receive tax-payer funds still refuses to implement a meaningful retirement plan for the very animals they are responsible for. So on days like today, when pro-racing protagonists claim that those who oppose horse racing would be responsible for horse deaths if they got their way, remind them to take a look at whatโ€™s already happening under the industryโ€™s watch. And ask them โ€” where is the love they claim to have for horses when theyโ€™re no longer profitable?
