You know when God has your back when you are protected and covered by His blood after a car accident.
In addition, He ordained for my sweet niece, Siena, to assist me the same day of my doctor’s visit.
Siena was such great help —with a gentle, kind, loving, patient and empathetic soul, she smiled at every person followed by a sweet “hello and thank you “
The waiting room was quiet until my 12-year-old niece, Siena, looked up from her phone and locked eyes with a few spinal discs on the counter and a life-sized plastic skeleton in the corner of the room.
“What are these squishy things between the bones?” She asked.
I immediately picked up on her vibe. Instead of treating her like a tagalong kid, I responded like she was a junior medical student.
I pointed her toward the full spinal skeleton hanging from a stand near the adjustment table and said it’s what protects the discs from rubbing on top of each other.
Siena looked at the separate model discs on the desk and she gently tapped the flexible parts between the plastic bones.
Medical’s term is the nucleus pulposus. Think of the disc like a jelly donut. The outside is a tough, chewy ring of cartilage, but that jelly inside is actually a mix of water and collagen fibers. It acts like a hydraulic shock absorber.
When your aunt jumps, walks, or sits, that jelly squishes and shifts so those bones on the spinal skeleton don’t go smashing into each other.
But if the donut jelly gets squeezed too hard from bad movement or an accident it can cause nerves around it to tear or get pinched or get sprained causing symptoms like headaches or back aches or light headedness that can cases day to day restrictions.
For the rest of the appointment, my routine adjustment became a hands-on biomechanics seminar:
The Reflex Test: when Jacob the Dr. Asst., was testing my reflex with the reflex hammer, he tapped my patellar tendon, watched my leg involuntary twitch, and nodded sagely like a seasoned professional, Siena laughed and said “even my doctor did that to my knee, I liked how it felt, it was funny.”
By the time we got to the car Siena was monitoring my move and checking to make sure I was walking ok .❤️🩹✝️
