🩸 Why might you pass blood clots after delivery? After childbirth, your body sheds blood and tissue from the uterine lining. This postpartum discharge is called lochia. Small clots can occur, especially during the first few days. Why might clots form? Blood can temporarily pool in the vagina or uterus. Bleeding may increase briefly when you first stand up. The uterus is still contracting and returning toward its pre-pregnancy size. What does your nurse assess? 🩺 Amount and rate of bleeding Size and frequency of clots Uterine firmness and position Vital signs and symptoms Whether your bladder is full 🚨 Report these warning signs immediately: Clots the size of an egg or larger Soaking a pad in an hour or less Sudden heavy or increasing bleeding Dizziness, fainting, racing heart, or weakness Heavy bleeding can be an emergency, even without large clots. 🤍 Save this for later! 👀 Come back at 6 PM to learn why Pitocin may be given AFTER delivery!
