All the feels!!!! 🥹❤️
No matter the economy. No matter how many salons were within a one-mile radius. I PRESSED THE GAS! There was no fear!
Within 30 days, I signed a billboard contract, a Cheesecake Factory menu advertising contract, AND a Jezebel Magazine contract!
Our salon was in a high-traffic location, but if you were speeding past, you could easily miss us. So I made sure that even if you didn’t see the salon, you were going to see BLACK WOMEN IN PRINT! On billboards, in magazines, and everywhere our customers were. And at the time, nobody was marketing salons like that!
The wrap-up…
The beauty industry has taken care of me my ENTIRE life. My uncle was a hairstylist, and his success paid for so many of the things that positioned me for mine. Being his shampoo tech gave me a skill that ensured I was NEVER a broke college student. Going on to earn my cosmetology license and opening my own salon at just 24 years old was nothing but grace and favor.
But the real gift was never losing the ability to believe in my own dreams. I’ve always had the audacity to dream like a child and the courage to execute like a grown woman!
I didn’t even realize how much I needed this reminder as I prepare to close out 2026. Because the run I’m about to go on in 2027? Baby, it’s me and BIG GANSTA LOCKSTEP! 🙌🏾🔥
I don’t know who needed this today, but sometimes you have to pull out your BODY OF WORK, slide it across the table, and remind folks that YOU BEEN THAT GIRL!
