Standing room only for male birth control
@asrm_orgCurrent options for men: condoms and vasectomy.
That's it. Womp.
Dr. Jon Oatley of Washington State University shared his lab's work on a non-hormonal male contraceptive.
They identified a gene that's essential for the final step of sperm formation. Blocking it impairs sperm before they ever leave the body.
What makes it promising:
✅ Targets sperm-producing cells specifically
✅ Doesn't interfere with testosterone
✅ Doesn't change testicular size
They're now testing a novel peptide that has been very effective in mice, and Dr. Oatley predicts it could reach clinical studies in the next 1–2 years.
Side effects and cost are still being worked out, so it's early days, but this is real progress toward sharing the burden of pregnancy prevention.
