“Forgive me as an elder in our community not being available to support you. Forgive me for ignoring your pain. Forgive me for abandoning you,” she said. She then broadened the statement:
“Our entire community abandoned him. As an elder, I’m going to own it. We did. We abandoned him.”
Vanzant also questioned why people who profited from Kelly’s success didn’t offer more support, specifically citing his reported struggles with literacy and asking why no one sat him down to help him learn to read.
