In 1985, a 29-year-old Japanese woman named Mariko Aoki wrote a letter to the magazine Hon no Zasshi, explaining that whenever she spent time browsing a bookstore, she suddenly felt the urge to use the bathroom.

After her letter appeared, the magazine received so many responses from readers who experienced the same thing that it published a 14-page investigation into the mystery.

The phenomenon became known as the "Mariko Aoki phenomenon" and gained widespread attention in Japan.

Several explanations have been proposed, including the smell of paper and ink, the relaxing atmosphere of bookstores, and the physical posture of browsing shelves.

More than 40 years later, there is still no scientifically established explanation for why it happens.
