North Korea’s state-linked hacking group TraderTraitor, associated with the notorious Lazarus Group, is suspected of carrying out the largest cryptocurrency theft ever recorded, stealing approximately $6.3 billion from Binance on October 29.
According to blockchain intelligence firms TRM Labs and Chainalysis, most of the stolen funds were transferred across multiple blockchains within just 20 minutes, with investigators linking the operation to previous North Korean cyberattacks.
Binance’s preliminary investigation identified a compromised employee laptop as a possible entry point, although the full circumstances remain under investigation.
Approximately $3 billion in stolen assets have since been frozen, while Binance has temporarily suspended withdrawals and pledged to cover customer losses.
The attack follows North Korea’s suspected $1.5 billion theft from Bybit in February 2025, highlighting Pyongyang’s expanding cyber capabilities and reliance on cryptocurrency theft to generate foreign currency, potentially supporting its sanctioned nuclear and ballistic missile programmes.
