GĂ©rard Schneider (1896 â 1986) is regarded as one of the forerunners of « action painting », a term coined by the American art critic Harold Rosenberg. In the late 1950s, the artist practised « dripping », expressing a free, gestural approach to painting.
The second half of the 1950s was among the most fruitful periods of his career. His meeting with Samuel Kootz in 1955, who would become his dealer across the Atlantic, helped establish his international reputation. Opus 59 D (1958) was also exhibited at Kootzâs New York gallery.
