Amish Records is happy to announce a benefit album to help our friend and collaborator Pat Gubler @theepgsix raise money to fix his damaged wire-strung harp (Disclaimer: the slide one harp is nylon strung)

Next Friday, November 6th we will release ‘Music from the Sherman Box Series: How to Heal A Broken Harp Edition’, which includes the original 2006 album plus ten never-before-released songs.

ALL FUNDS COLLECTED (INCLUDING THE BANDCAMP FEE) GO DIRECTLY TO THE REPAIR COSTS OF PAT’S HARP.

“It sounded like a “ping!” Or maybe a “ping” accompanied by a wooden creak. But there was something unsettling about it.

On closer examination I found the source—a hairline crack in the neck of a longtime companion: a late 1980’s Wire Strung Harp made by the Triplett company. It has been featured on my first three solo albums. Perhaps it was most widely heard on the track: “The Fallen Leaves That Jewel The Ground.” That instrumental was used to creepy effect in the soundtrack to Shane Meadows’ revenge flick, “Dead Man’s Shoes” right before some gnarly deeds occurred!

I followed the standard protocol for a stringed instrument with structural issues. They recommend you slowly lower the string tension to try to minimize the damage. (I have personally seen a harp in “self-destruct” mode!)

As I tuned the strings down, I decided to capture a few chords on the instrument—let’s call it an accidental microtonal excursion. I was thinking, “Perhaps, I can make at least make a little piece out of it.” (This resulted in “Sea Expansion”)

So, how does one heal a broken harp?

Reach out to friends for support, seek professional advice from mental health professionals and luthiers, acknowledge the good times you’ve had or be patient. And cautiously optimistic.

I’ve come up with a strategy to create a benefit release, to try and help fund the repairs on this well-loved instrument!
