Amish Records is happy to announce a benefit album to help our friend and collaborator Pat Gubler @theepgsix raise money to fix his damaged wire-strung harp (Disclaimer: the slide one harp is nylon strung)

Next Friday, November 6th we will release ‘Music from the Sherman Box Series: How to Heal A Broken Harp Edition’, which includes the original 2006 album plus ten never-before-released songs.

THIS IS A EXCLUSIVE DIGITAL RELEASE ON BANDCAMP NEXT FRIDAY, NOV 6.

“It sounded like a “ping!” Or maybe a “ping” accompanied by a wooden creak. But there was something unsettling about it.

On closer examination I found the source—a hairline crack in the neck of a longtime companion: a late 1980’s Wire Strung Harp made by the Triplett company. It has been featured on my first three solo albums. Perhaps it was most widely heard on the track: “The Fallen Leaves That Jewel The Ground.” That instrumental was used to creepy effect in the soundtrack to Shane Meadows’ revenge flick, “Dead Man’s Shoes” right before some gnarly deeds occurred!

I followed the standard protocol for a stringed instrument with structural issues. They recommend you slowly lower the string tension to try to minimize the damage. (I have personally seen a harp in “self-destruct” mode!)

As I tuned the strings down, I decided to capture a few chords on the instrument—let’s call it an accidental microtonal excursion. I was thinking, “Perhaps, I can make at least make a little piece out of it.” (This resulted in “Sea Expansion”)

So, how does one heal a broken harp?

Reach out to friends for support, seek professional advice from mental health professionals and luthiers, acknowledge the good times you’ve had or be patient. And cautiously optimistic.

I’ve come up with a strategy to create a benefit release, to try and help fund the repairs on this well-loved instrument!

Tim Barnes’ 2019 full-length: DE∆D-LOOP (AMI 038R/W), offered another arm in Barnes’ wide-ranging body of music and work, as well as supplying an additional thread connecting the electronic dance music, pop and sound art conversations the album engages.

In many ways DE∆D-LOOP is House music that takes a sideways approach to the language of dance music. As both a concept and a practice, Barnes aims to turn it on its side, reconsidering its structure and form. The tracks on DE∆D-LOOP reflect Barnes’ status as a renowned percussionist, offering rhythms and textures that both draw the listener in and maintain a spatial and temporal distance/uncertainty.

Since 1995, Tim Barnes has been internationally acclaimed as a musician, having played with a range of artists including Tony Conrad, Ikue Mori, Sonic Youth, Glenn Kotche, P.G. Six, Mike Watt, Royal Trux, Stereolab, Jim O’Rourke, Beth Orton, among others. Working across both genre and instrumentation, Barnes’ singular history as a musician reflects his versatile ear and performance range.

DE∆D-LOOP is an installment of Amish’s in-house label Required Wreckers, pairing music and sound art with visual artists who share a thematic or process-based methodology. DE∆D-LOOP features the work of American-born and French-based artist/filmmaker Erick Baudelaire’s ‘Blind Walls’ series.

Required Wreckers 4 — Gregg Kowalsky with Jozef van Wissem ‘Movements in Marble and Stone’ (Amish Records, 2012)

“For Baroque Lute, Tapes and Resonant Space” documented Kowalsky’s on going tape chants process, a project previously realized on both his Battery Townsley (2011) and Tape Chants (2009) LPs. For this iteration, Kowalsky tuned square and sine waves to Dutch lutanist Jozef van Wissem’s lute and then played these recordings through cassette players. Though they have collaborated previously, this performance at Issue Project Room in October 2011 is the first chronicling of Van Wissem and Kowalksy’s duo-work.

The word on the street is that the band’s label stooge will be in attendance. by @amishrecords

The very recently released JAMES BLACKSHAW ‘Fractures On The Horizon’ LP.

This is the second album James has released with us since his self-imposed, decade long musical hiatus ended.

“Fractures On the Horizon proffers two tracks in Blackshaw’s patented extended-length compositions, performed completely solo. The title track is practically a primer on the musician’s vision: gentle but relentless fingerpicking, chord changes that flow instead of shift, a tune that swirls in and out of its forward momentum, and perfect use of repetition. Blackshaw truly understands how to build a road by knowing when to step off in another direction. “Fractures On the Horizon” doesn’t so much play back as unfold, pulling us right into the center of itself and surrounding us with beauty.” - Big Takeover

There is one more run of live dates before end of the year. Announcement coming soooooon! by @amishrecords

This Saturday, September 26, we celebrate the 20th anniversary of P.G. SIX’s third album ‘Music For the Sherman Box Series and other works’ (Amish, 2006)

The Sherman Box Series originated as part of an exhibition by visual artist Christine Krol at Abaton Gallery, Jersey City, NJ that ran from August through September 2005. The work in this show was selected from Krol’s ongoing series of collages constructed out of Nat Sherman cigarette boxes, as well as small paintings on wood panels. In his contribution to the exhibition, Pat Gubler aka PG Six contributed seven pieces consisting primarily of folk harp and electronic processing played on a loop within the space of the gallery. These pieces explore the sonic possibilities of the wire-strung harp and its long sustaining tones, as well as the bray harp’s sitar-like buzzing. But unlike his previous song-based releases, ‘Music for the Sherman Box Series and other works’ exclusively showcases P.G. Six’s training in modern composition, especially his unique blending of twentieth-century minimalism and more traditional folk-techniques.

In addition to the work Pat composed in conjunction with Krol’s pieces, the album includes “The Book of Rayguns” which marked P.G. Six’s solo-debut, a piece for six electric guitars that dates from 1994 and which was originally released as a seven-inch single on the Tower Recordings’ imprint, Superlux Records in 1995. This piece and the album’s final selection, “Cartographies for Piano,” are a result of Pat’s studies with composer Dary John Mizelle at SUNY Purchase in the early 90s.

‘Music from The Sherman Box Series and other works’ (AMI024) is still available on compact disc and streaming everywhere.

“While Gubler uses similar little harp miniatures as transitory modes or punctuation on his song records, when strung together they reveal an internal sturdiness that belies their light-handed tenor. Using only wire-strung and bray harps and minimal electronics, Gubler gho by @amishrecords
