17 hours agoLIONS PARK IS A PARK FIRST — NOT A COFFEE SHOP. What is happening to the wildlife at Lions Park in Costa Mesa is heartbreaking. The City removed the cactus that provided the squirrels with food, moisture, shelter, and protection. Burrow openings have been covered with metal mesh, and poison and traps have been used in this public park. I have personally witnessed what I believe was poison being placed. Hundreds of squirrels have reportedly disappeared or been killed. The remaining squirrels have been left exposed, frightened, and vulnerable, with much of their natural habitat gone. NEAT COFFEE AND THE CITY HAVE BEEN INFORMED ABOUT THESE WILDLIFE CONCERNS. They know what is happening, yet the lack of meaningful action speaks volumes. It feels as though they are turning a blind eye while the wildlife continues to suffer. Let's be clear: Lions Park is a PUBLIC PARK FIRST. People come to enjoy nature and wildlife. The squirrels were there long before the coffee shop. I'm not against a coffee shop. I'm against destroying wildlife habitat and allowing poison and traps to be used in a public park. I will NOT patronize a business that has been made aware of these concerns and does not appear to care enough to speak up or take action. OUR PARKS SHOULD PROTECT WILDLIFE — NOT DESTROY IT. The squirrels can't speak for themselves. We have to speak for them. Please share and help bring attention to what's happening at Lions Park.
