The world has only known about our pregnancy for a few weeks, and I’m already feeling a shocking and sickening exhaustion from the thousands of comments like these that we’re receiving daily.

First, take a moment to let the staggering applause for Sharon sink in. She left this comment on Hannah’s “first trimester recap,” which generally includes giddy photos of the two of us gleefully geeking about the early stages of parenting. A few days later, Sharon’s comment has 50,000 likes and counting.

Let me be very clear: Sharon sucks. It takes a particularly wretched and disgusting personality to feel comfortable commenting negatively on a happy couple’s pregnancy update. I feel no desire or obligation to extend her grace, but I do acknowledge (and pity) that her underlying beliefs about disability and parenting probably stem from a lack of understanding and experience.

So what, exactly, is Sharon not understanding?

Two main things.

1- A physical disability, even one as severe as mine, does not preclude someone from physically engaging with their child or the world around them. Of course, adaptations are needed. Creativity is needed. I’ll push a stroller with my adaptive stroller attachment instead of my arms. I’ll use an extra pillow or supports to keep the baby safely on my lap. When baby becomes a toddler, I’ll give rides on my wheelchair, rather than carrying them in my arms. We know hundreds if not thousands of disabled parents with a wide range of physical function. They have found brilliant and practical solutions to enable physical care for their children in so many beautiful ways. This is our first rodeo, but we are not entering uncharted territory by any means. CONTINUED IN COMMENTS

People used to compare me to a single mom when my husband was in residency. I always corrected them because even though he often went several days without seeing the kids, he was supporting me and helping me make decisions and most importantly loving and delighting in our kids. The physical labor of parenting is the least important part.

You're going to be an amazing father! Whatever physical shortcomings you may have will be made up by the amount of love enjoy that you bring to everyone around you. I have no doubt that your children will feel incredibly loved by you and they will learn so much and become the kind of people we need in this world. I'm really excited for the two of you and don't let the hate get to you it says more about them than it does you anyway.

Any child would happily take a disabled, present father, than a neglectful one. You two will be amazing parents. ♥️

An interesting measurement of our society to prioritise physicality over mental and spiritual ability.... But alas, I'm not surprised. Considering Kim Kardashian's ass gets more attention than astronauts preforming wizard level science on a space station orbiting us in the heavens right now... Nevermind, what's popular never walked hand in hand with what's right. Stay punk Shane & Hannah, this is your dream, live it to your own design! ♥️

I’m sorry do they not see Shane? That person must be new here. I am confident the two of you will do just fine. ❤️

Amen! I have faith that you 2 will be just fine! And will be incredible parents! How dare anyone try to steal the excitement out of your experience! I hope to see discreet (as in keeping baby’s identity safe) videos of how you do adapt to be the best parents you can be! Congratulations I’m so excited for the 2 of you!❤️
