AFTER SILENCE II
Can an object communicate something about the person who created it?
At Design Week Lagos, I had the opportunity to meet designer
@kojoaffedzie and learn about his sculptural lamp, After Silence II.
What caught my attention was not just the form of the lamp, but the personal story behind it.
Kojo explained how the piece represents a new phase in his life. The metal reflects a growing sense of confidence and boldness. The opening represents his willingness to show his light, but more selectively, while the perforated top represents that light gradually growing until it fills the room.
I found this particularly interesting when I considered it alongside the first edition, After Silence I.
The first piece has a more organic, irregular and almost unrestricted appearance. To me, it gives the impression of someone holding nothing back.
The second edition takes a different direction. Its straighter lines, sharper edges and more structured form give it a more composed and deliberate character.
I began to wonder how much of this difference in form could influence the way we perceive the objects, even before knowing the stories behind them.
That curiosity led me to recreate After Silence II using Rhino 3D.
Beyond the modelling exercise, it was an opportunity to study another designer's work, understand the thinking behind its details and explore how form, material and light can communicate ideas beyond an object's function.
One thing I continue to appreciate about design is that it gives us another way to express ourselves.
Sometimes, what we create says as much about us as the people who experience it.
