Why do planes take off into the wind? 🌬️
A wing needs speed through the air to lift the plane. With the wind in our face we reach that airspeed at a lower speed over the ground, so the takeoff run is shorter and there is more margin. A tailwind does the opposite and makes the run longer.
"Captain, the wind is against us. Can we wait for a tailwind?"
"No."
"Why not?"
"Because wind in our face is our friend."
"So a tailwind is bad?"
"A tailwind is a long runway and a short fuse."
Bonus fact: for the same reason pilots prefer to land into the wind too: lower ground speed means a shorter rollout.
Send this to the friend who thinks planes want a tailwind 🌬️
