Kuba asks. Captain Zbyszek says no. ☕

Why your pilots keep the seatbelt sign on after landing 💺✈️ The wheels touch down, someone hears the "ding" of a phone and half the cabin stands up. But the plane is still a vehicle on the move. We taxi to the gate at up to around 20 knots, about the speed of a car in a parking lot that's in a hurry. Another aircraft crosses in front of us, a baggage cart pulls out, ground control tells us to stop: we brake hard. Seated, you barely notice. Standing in the aisle with a bag in your hand, you end up in row one. The sign goes off only when we're parked at the gate and the engines are shutting down. Bonus fact: that "doors to disarm and cross-check" call isn't a formality. It switches off the emergency slides. Open an armed door at the gate and a giant slide inflates into the jet bridge in a few seconds. Kuba wanted to turn the sign off early to be popular. Captain said no. Stand up early or stay seated? 🧍 / 💺 #aviation #pilotlife #avgeek #travelhumor #aviationhumor #travelfacts 🤖 AI-generated characters · real aviation facts by @captainsaidno
Why do pilots say "Mayday"? 🆘✈️ It comes from French. In 1923, a radio officer at Croydon Airport in London, Frederick Mockford, needed a distress word that both British and French pilots would understand on the London–Paris flights. He picked "Mayday", from "m'aider": "help me". A few years later it became the international distress call. And we say it three times: "Mayday, Mayday, Mayday", so nobody can mistake it for anything else. Coffee machine broken: is that a Mayday? ☕ / 🆘 Tag the friend who would shout Mayday over a broken coffee machine 👇 #aviation #pilotlife #avgeek #mayday #aviationhistory #aviationhumor #cockpit 🤖 AI-generated characters · real aviation facts by @captainsaidno
Black. Like my sense of humor. ☕ Kuba asked how the captain takes his coffee. He is still waiting for the punchline. Squawk 7700 – what does it mean? 🚨✈️ Kuba saw it on Flightradar and panicked. Captain didn't. Every airliner sends a four-digit code (a "squawk") to air traffic control. 7700 means a general emergency – anything from a sick passenger to a technical problem. Controllers clear the sky around the plane and give it priority, and suddenly thousands of people are watching it online. Most 7700 flights land safely. It's a call for priority, not a disaster. What if the landing gear doesn't come down? A Polish crew landed anyway 🇵🇱✈️ 1 November 2011. A Boeing 767 from Newark to Warsaw, 231 people on board. The gear would not extend. Captain Tadeusz Wrona circled for over an hour to burn fuel while fire trucks covered the runway with foam. Then he put the plane down on its belly, gently. Everyone got out in about 90 seconds. Nobody was hurt. "Polish pilots are the best." "Yes." "Wait, you agree?!" "This once." "Arm doors and cross-check" – what does it actually mean? ✈️🚪 Kuba wanted to say it on the PA because it sounds cool. Captain said no. Arming a door connects the escape slide to the door. If an armed door is opened, the slide inflates by itself in seconds – ready for an evacuation. Before we open the doors at the gate, the crew disarms them again. Cross-check means a colleague checks your door too. Forget to disarm, and the airline gets a very expensive bouncy castle. 🎈 Send this to a flight attendant 👇 #aviation #pilotlife #avgeek #flightattendant #cabincrew #aviationhumor 🤖 AI-generated characters · real aviation facts by @captainsaidno
Why do planes take off into the wind? 🌬️ A wing needs speed through the air to lift the plane. With the wind in our face we reach that airspeed at a lower speed over the ground, so the takeoff run is shorter and there is more margin. A tailwind does the opposite and makes the run longer. "Captain, the wind is against us. Can we wait for a tailwind?" "No." "Why not?" "Because wind in our face is our friend." "So a tailwind is bad?" "A tailwind is a long runway and a short fuse." Bonus fact: for the same reason pilots prefer to land into the wind too: lower ground speed means a shorter rollout. That tiny triangle above some windows? It has a job. 🔺✈️ Kuba spotted it in a passenger's photo. Captain said it's not decoration. On many airliners, a small triangle marks the window with the best view of the wing. If the crew needs to check the wing – for ice, the flaps or anything unusual – they know exactly which window to look through. And yes, it's the best window seat for wing views. That's why Kuba never gets it. 😅 Send this to your window-seat friend 👇 #aviation #avgeek #windowseat #pilotlife #aviationfacts #travelhacks 🤖 AI-generated characters · real aviation facts by @captainsaidno
He filed a flight plan to California. He landed in Ireland. "Wrong way!" 🇮🇪✈️ July 1938. Douglas Corrigan took off from New York with a plan to fly to California. 28 hours later he landed near Dublin. His explanation: the compass failed and he flew the wrong way. Almost nobody believed him. He got a parade anyway. "Can I make that mistake?" "No." Send this to the friend who never trusts the GPS 👇 Did he do it on purpose? 😏 Yes or no? #aviation #pilotlife #avgeek #realstory #aviationhistory #wrongwaycorrigan 🤖 AI-generated characters · real aviation facts by @captainsaidno
That landing felt HARD? It was on purpose. 🌧️✈️ Kuba apologised for a firm touchdown. Captain said no – no sorry needed. On a wet runway, pilots put the wheels down firmly on purpose. The tyres cut through the water, touch the runway and spin up quickly, so the brakes can do their job. A soft, floating landing on a wet runway eats up more runway – and that's the last thing you want. So next time a landing in the rain feels firm: that's the pilot doing it right. You just landed and the engines suddenly ROAR. Nothing is wrong. 🛬 Right after touchdown the engine covers slide back and redirect part of the engine airflow forward. That is reverse thrust, and it helps the aircraft slow down while the wheel brakes do the rest. So when the engines get loud after landing, it is not a problem. It is the plane braking. "Captain! The engines just roared! Should I tell the passengers?" "No." "Why not?" "That was me. I asked them to roar." "So you made it louder on purpose?" "Yes. Quiet landings are for gliders." Bonus fact: pilots often use only part of the available reverse thrust. How much depends on the runway, the weather and the aircraft, so the sound you hear changes from landing to landing. Both engines stopped over the Atlantic. 306 people on board. ✈️🌊 August 24, 2001. Air Transat Flight 236, an Airbus A330, is flying from Toronto to Lisbon. A fuel leak in one engine slowly drains the tanks. Over the Atlantic, first one engine stops, then the second. No engines. Middle of the ocean. Before dawn. The crew turned the giant jet into a glider. For about 19 minutes they glided towards the Lajes air base in the Azores and landed there. The landing was hard – tyres burst – but all 306 people on board survived. It is one of the longest glides ever made by an airliner. Kuba asked if Captain could do the same. Yes. Has he tried? No. And not today. Would you stay calm on that flight? 👇 #aviation #pilotlife #avgeek #realstory #airbus #aviationhumor 🤖 AI-generated characters · AI illustrations · real aviation story by @captainsaidno
