The creator of Scream (1996), Kevin Williamson, was inspired to write the story by a real-life experience.
He began writing the screenplay after watching a documentary about serial killer Danny Rolling, known as the “Gainesville Ripper.” Later, he noticed an open window he didn’t remember leaving open, became frightened, and called a friend while checking the house.
In an interview years later, he said:
“I was house-sitting for a friend and I was watching a special on the Gainesville Ripper and it creeped me out so much. I basically walked around the house with a knife, checking under the bed and in the shower just to make sure no one was there.”
