Zhou Song, The Guardian (New Nature series), 2025. Oil on canvas.

Zhou Song is a contemporary Chinese artist based in Beijing. A graduate of the Tianjin Academy of Fine Arts, he first attracted attention with his hyperrealistic oil paintings, later developing a distinctive visual language that combines surrealism, philosophy and science. Working across painting, sculpture and installation, he explores the uneasy relationship between humans, nature and technology.

Song creates a world where the ordinary takes a wonderfully strange turn. Blending surrealism, quiet humour and absurdity, he transforms familiar figures and everyday objects into visual riddles. With a sharp eye for metaphor, he explores identity, human behaviour and the curious ways we present ourselves to the world. His characters may look composed, but beneath the surface, things are rarely quite as simple as they seem.

Song has exhibited internationally. His imagery catches us off guard: human figures become strange hybrids, nature develops a mind of its own, and the everyday slips into the extraordinary. In his world, reality hasn't disappeared - it has simply developed a rather unusual sense of humour.

This really surprised me when I first saw it. I immediately started trying to figure everything out. What was happening. An artist inviting the viewer to step outside of themself and think in a new way is an amazing skill. ๐Ÿค๐Ÿค๐Ÿค
