Well, howdy there, my fellow Southern good ol’ boys, Let me tell you something. The only things that seem to keep thriving down here in Mississippi are racism and educational failure. Mississippi has a long history of racial segregation, voter suppression, and discrimination, and our state has struggled for generations with poverty and educational inequality. That’s something we ought to be ashamed of, especially those of us white folks who refuse to acknowledge that history. Another thing is that too many of us have allowed wealthy oligarchs and powerful interests to influence how we think, convincing us to vote against our own economic interests simply because certain politicians look like us. Some of us are so consumed by racism that we refuse to recognize the hard work and qualifications of Black people. For generations, white society has enslaved, murdered, segregated, and disenfranchised Black Americans, yet somehow we always find a way to blame them for everything. Hell, we’ll crash our own damn car and blame the Black man down the street for it, That’s how ridiculous this mentality has become. We white folks here in Mississippi need to educate ourselves, confront our history, and stop treating Black people as the explanation for every problem we create ourselves.
