FG approves ₦45.08bn to install disease detection systems at five Nigerian airports

The Federal Government has approved ₦45.08 billion for the deployment of an integrated biosecurity and disease surveillance system at five international airports across Nigeria.

The Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof. Ali Pate, disclosed this after Wednesday’s Federal Executive Council meeting chaired by President Bola Tinubu at the State House in Abuja.

According to Pate, the project will be implemented through a 20-year public-private partnership with the BioHealth Consortium and is aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s ability to detect and respond swiftly to emerging infectious disease threats.

The initiative will cover airports in Lagos, Abuja, Kano, Port Harcourt and Enugu, with technologies including aircraft wastewater surveillance, air and surface sampling, and specialised pathogen detection systems.

Pate said the surveillance network would monitor a range of potentially dangerous pathogens, while improving coordination among relevant agencies and strengthening health security at Nigeria’s borders.

The minister also provided an update on the country’s Ebola situation, confirming that the patient diagnosed in October has recovered.

He added that contact tracing and other containment measures were still ongoing to prevent the virus from spreading within the community.

Would you ever drink cockroach milk? 🪳🥛

Scientists have discovered that the Pacific beetle cockroach produces a milk-like substance containing protein crystals packed with nutrients. Research suggests these crystals contain more than three times the energy of an equivalent amount of cow’s milk, making them a potential candidate for future nutritional supplements.

Unlike cows, cockroaches cannot simply be milked. The substance is produced to nourish developing embryos, and extracting its nutrient-rich crystals is an extremely difficult process.

Although researchers are exploring whether these proteins could eventually be produced on a larger scale, cockroach milk is still far from becoming a commercially available superfood.

The science is fascinating, but the thought of drinking cockroach milk might be enough to make most people lose their appetite. 💀
