Family costumes have always been our thing.

I start planning months in advance. And if we can’t find the perfect costume - we make them. Those were always my favorite ones.

We all look forward to it every year.

This year was going to be Peter Pan. And Hazey was going to be the cutest little Mr. Smee you’ve ever seen. 😭

I could picture the whole thing. I could picture him.

And now…

How do we do a family costume without him? Take another family picture when our favorite piece isn’t here anymore?

I couldn’t do it. I didn’t want to plan costumes or even celebrate Halloween.

But then the kids kept asking what we were going to be this year. 😭

These past three months have taught me to make the memories. Take the pictures. Show up. Even when you’re dying inside and wishing you could go back.

Somehow we pulled it together.

And of course - we had to include our boy. His little blanket. The one he loved so much.

I would give anything to have our little Mr. Smee here with us. To be chasing him around - trying to get him to keep his costume on. I could just see him with his belly hanging out and a stick on beard. To have all five of my babies together in another family picture.

Instead, we have his blanket. 😭

And I hate that this is what our family pictures look like now.

I look back at all our family costumes over the years. There was life before Haze. Then two amazing years with Haze. And now there’s life after Haze.

I hate that there’s an “after”.

I hate that we have to keep making memories without him. That every new family picture will be “after” Haze.

Nothing feels the same anymore. Not even things that used to being us so much joy.

I don’t know if I’m glad we did it. I really don’t.

I wanted to give my kids another year of something they’ve always loved - but I look at these pictures and just bawl.

Because this isn’t the picture I had planned.

There should be a little boy with a round belly and a crooked beard. Probably refusing to sit still. Making us laugh. Making the whole thing worth all the effort.

There should be five kids in the picture. Not four kids and a blanket.

I don’t want to learn how to do this life without him.
