After 50, what should come first: walking or strength training?
Walking is brilliant for your heart, joints and overall health. But as we get older, maintaining muscle strength becomes increasingly important.
Strong muscles help you get out of chairs, climb stairs, carry your shopping and stay independent for longer.
If you only have time for one, I’d prioritise strength training.
Here are 3 simple exercises to get started:
1. Sit to Stand: Build leg strength for everyday movements.
2. Wall Push-Ups: Strengthen your upper body for everyday pushing movements.
3. Farmer’s Carry: Improve grip and full-body strength for carrying everyday items.
Of course, the best routine includes both walking and strength training. They each offer different benefits.
