This is the most important thing I’ve ever created.

After helping thousands of people over 50, I kept seeing the same two groups struggling:

The first group have been told, “It‘s just your age and you need to learn to accept decline.” That’s NOT true, and I wanted to help them.

The second group were people who were trying to improve their health… but felt overwhelmed by conflicting advice and didn’t know where to start. I wanted to help them too.

So I wrote Independence For Life.

This isn’t just another exercise book.

It’s a step-by-step guide to building your own strength, mobility, and independence plan for life.

If you:
• Feel stiffer or weaker than you used to
• Worry about losing mobility or independence
• Want to stay active as you age
• Have arthritis, joint pain, or balance issues
• Don’t know which exercises are actually right for you

…this book was written for you.

Inside, I’ll show you how to reduce pain, regain mobility, rebuild strength, and restore full function using the exact method I use in clinic, helping you stay active, capable, and independent for years to come, no matter your starting point.

I‘ll also show you how to build strength, muscle and balance so you can keep doing the things you enjoy for as long as you want.

📚 Independence For Life is available now for pre-order.

And if you order now, you’ll also receive all pre-order bonuses.

Hi, I'm Will.

For a long time, I thought I knew exactly where my life was heading.

I became a physio to work in professional sport. I chased it hard, and eventually, I got there.

But almost as soon as I got there... I had this quiet, uncomfortable thought:

This isn't it.

The thing l'd worked towards for years felt... empty.

Not long after, I decided to leave. I didn't really know what I was going to do next, just that it wasn't that.

And that's when I stumbled into working with people in their 60s, 70s, 80s.

People who weren't chasing medals, they just wanted to walk without pain, get up from the floor keep their independence.

And for the first time, my work felt real.

Over the years, the path grew into a clinic, a YouTube Channel and Lifelong Mobility, something I never planned, but now couldn’t imagine not doing.

If that's what you want too, you're in the right place.

Welcome. by @willharlowphysio

Your stronger leg might be doing more work than you realise, leaving the weaker side struggling when you climb stairs, step off kerbs or get up from a chair. 🦵

The good news is a couple of simple exercises can help you build more balanced leg strength and feel steadier on your feet.

Comment ROADMAP for a free exercise plan showing you how to improve your balance after 50.

If you’re trying to improve your balance by standing on one leg, there’s something you can try 👇

Most everyday balance challenges happen when you’re moving, whether that’s walking, turning around or stepping over something.

That’s why it’s important to practise dynamic balance, which means staying steady while your body is in motion.

Here are 3 exercises worth trying:

🔸 Tightrope Walk

🔸 Standing Marches

🔸 Weight Shifting

⚠️ When doing these exercises, make sure you‘re somewhere safe, with something to hold onto if needed.

These exercises can help you build the balance skills you need for everyday life, especially as you get older.

Start slowly, keep a sturdy chair or countertop nearby for support, and build your confidence gradually.

There are a few things I wish more people started doing before they noticed their strength and mobility declining.

As a physiotherapist, I see how much of a difference simple daily habits can make to the way we move as we get older.

Here are 5 habits I’d encourage everyone over 50 to build:

1️⃣ Maintain Your Hip Mobility: Keeping your hips mobile can make everyday movements like walking, bending and getting dressed much easier.

2️⃣ Practise Squats: Strengthen your legs and make everyday tasks like getting out of a chair or climbing stairs feel easier.

3️⃣ Do Reverse Lunges: Build leg strength, balance and coordination to help you stay steady on your feet.

4️⃣ Try Farmer’s Carries: Carrying weights while walking helps strengthen your grip, core and legs, making tasks like carrying shopping bags easier.

5️⃣ Practise Getting Up From the Floor: This is one of the most useful skills to maintain as you age, helping you stay confident and independent.

Start with what feels manageable, use support when needed, and gradually build up your strength and confidence.

Just 2–3 minutes a day in this position could help your back feel better 🙌

It’s called the Static Back, and it’s one of my favourite resting positions to recommend to patients struggling with lower back pain, stiffness and tension.

Here’s how to do it:

1️⃣ Lie on your back on the floor, with your lower legs resting on a chair.

2️⃣ Aim for roughly 90-degree angles at your hips and knees.

3️⃣ Rest your arms by your sides with your palms facing upwards.

4️⃣ Take slow, deep breaths and imagine your back gently melting into the floor.

5️⃣ Stay here for 2–3 minutes, allowing your muscles to relax.

This simple position may help to:
✅ Ease lower back tension
✅ Relax tight muscles
✅ Take pressure off your back
✅ Encourage deeper breathing
✅ Help you unwind after a long day

Give it a try and see how your back feels afterwards. Stop if it makes your symptoms worse. by @willharlowphysio

One of my favourite ways to work on my mobility is to go outside into the garden and spend 5–10 minutes just moving around and seeing where I feel a bit stiff.

The deep squat is one of my go-to exercises.

It gets your hips, knees and ankles moving, and I like adding a few reaches and gentle rotations to work on any areas that feel particularly tight that day.

And don’t worry if you can’t get all the way down.

Start with a quarter squat or half squat and work within the range you’ve got.

If you practise it regularly, you may find that position gradually becomes easier.

You don’t have to spend hours working on your mobility.

A few minutes here and there, done regularly, is a great place to start.

Give it a go next time you’re in the garden! 🍃 by @willharlowphysio
