The development that struck me most in this election was this woman. Deb Haaland has been elected governor of New Mexico. She is the first Native American woman in U.S. history to be elected governor. A woman emerging from a people who were, for centuries, displaced from their lands, had their language banned, and saw their voices suppressed, will now govern an entire state. This is not merely an electoral victory. It is a moment where those who were once silenced are now speaking for themselves. Peoples whose history was once written by others are now writing their own history. Congratulations, Deb Haaland.
