The whole idea with these bowls is to create a form that has contrasting shapes inside and out.

Their exteriors are lined with ledges and the overall profile is angular and sharp, whereas their inside forms are curved and smooth. This is very different from my initial tests, as they were thrown with the rough linear protrusions already on the outside, thus the inside form mirrored that to some degree, resulting in a shape that had shoulders and ridges on the interior too. There are pros and cons in terms of making each, but I think I prefer those with the more minimalist interiors.

Beyond the throwing and trimming on the potter’s wheel, in my longer YouTube video this weekend, (a link to which you can find via the Linktree in my profile’s biography), I take you through how these rather particular vessels are sanded post biscuit firing, how they’re waxed and glazed and finally, how I deal with a few mishaps post reduction firing in my gas kiln to cone ten, (1290ºC), or thereabouts.

What you see here is just a short and highly condensed version of what you’ll find over on my YouTube channel. In those longer format videos I can explain each step in far greater detail than these films; think of these as trailers almost.

I’d love to hear which of these vessels you prefer but I’ve already got a long list of adjustments to make when I next throw a batch. For instance, I want to make them with even sharper lines around the outside, as here, I think the glaze ended up softening them too much. As for the ledges themselves, I want to trim them to appear more arbitrarily across the exterior, for instance,I want larger flat expanses between them and finally, I’ll focus on creating taller shapes and hopefully more sculptural forms.

Thanks so much for watching!

When I first started, I underestimated the glaze tidying process. I thought I’d prefer the random bits I’d get out of it. When cleaning up the glaze when it dries though, it becomes much cleaner and more predictable which opened up my opportunities so much more

Hey Florian, I’m Felix. How many versions do you usually try before you settle on a new bowl shape?

You're an inspiration. One day I hope to throw a beautiful angular pot of my own.

I think they are amazing. I appreciate all the work you are doing with the video. The bowls impress me because it takes a lot of forethought to design them, throw them and to balance the tall foot just right. Keep creating. I learn SO much from your videos.

Definitely functionable, thank you for the newer understanding of the treatment of glazing prefiring and your preparation of such, haven’t been taught that before… all art is function, keep
