๐St Albans Cathedral: Where Roman Britain Meets Medieval England โช๐ฐ
Rising above the historic city of St Albans, this magnificent cathedral preserves nearly two thousand years of history. Its origins are closely connected to Roman Verulamium, one of the most important towns in Roman Britain, where St Alban, traditionally regarded as Britainโs first Christian martyr, was executed during the Roman period. A monastery was founded near his burial place in 793 by King Offa of Mercia. Construction of the present church began in 1077, remarkably incorporating thousands of Roman bricks reclaimed from the ruins of Verulamium, making the ancient city an enduring part of its medieval architecture. Its Norman structure, Gothic additions and artistic treasures reflect centuries of religious and cultural development. The abbey later became an influential centre of medieval learning and played a role in the events preceding Magna Carta in 1215. Today, this extraordinary monument stands in St Albans, Hertfordshire, England. ๐โจ
