Bu isi by @civitasromana

📍St Albans Cathedral: Where Roman Britain Meets Medieval England ⛪🏰

Rising above the historic city of St Albans, this magnificent cathedral preserves nearly two thousand years of history. Its origins are closely connected to Roman Verulamium, one of the most important towns in Roman Britain, where St Alban, traditionally regarded as Britain’s first Christian martyr, was executed during the Roman period. A monastery was founded near his burial place in 793 by King Offa of Mercia. Construction of the present church began in 1077, remarkably incorporating thousands of Roman bricks reclaimed from the ruins of Verulamium, making the ancient city an enduring part of its medieval architecture. Its Norman structure, Gothic additions and artistic treasures reflect centuries of religious and cultural development. The abbey later became an influential centre of medieval learning and played a role in the events preceding Magna Carta in 1215. Today, this extraordinary monument stands in St Albans, Hertfordshire, England. 📜✨

Orpheus: Greek Mythology in Ancient Edessa 🎶🏛️

In the heart of ancient Edessa, the enchanting music of Orpheus was immortalised in stone nearly eighteen centuries ago. Dating to 194 AD, this remarkable Roman mosaic depicts the legendary Greek musician surrounded by animals captivated by his lyre. Its greatest historical significance lies in its Classical Syriac inscription, written in a dialect of Aramaic, which records the date and identifies the mosaicist, Bar Saged. The combination of Greek mythology and Syriac writing reveals the cultural diversity of Roman Edessa, where Hellenistic artistic traditions flourished alongside local identities. Originally decorating a funerary chamber, the mosaic was illegally removed in 1998 and repatriated to Turkey in 2012. Today, it is preserved at the Şanlıurfa Archaeology Museum in Turkey.🎵🌿

Ktisis: The Spirit of Creation in Ancient Edessa 🏛️✨

From the foundations of cities to the splendour of ancient monuments, the very act of creation takes human form in this remarkable mosaic. Dating to the fifth or sixth century AD, the female figure represents Ktisis, an allegorical personification of foundation and construction rather than a goddess. Her name derives from the Greek verb ktizo, meaning “to found” or “to build”, while the Greek inscription above her head confirms her identity. The measuring instrument she holds symbolises architectural precision. Beyond its artistic beauty, the mosaic reflects the importance of urban development, civic prosperity and architectural patronage in Late Antiquity, while illustrating the survival of classical Greek traditions within the increasingly Christian Eastern Roman Empire. Discovered in the villa complex of Haleplibahçe, it is now preserved at the Haleplibahçe Mosaic Museum in Şanlıurfa, ancient Edessa, Turkey. 🏺🌿

Echoes of Eternity in Ephesus

In the year 135 AD, while the Roman Empire under Emperor Hadrian was reshaping the political landscape of Judea after years of intense turmoil, a quieter revolution of knowledge and memory was unfolding along the coast of Asia Minor.

In the bustling city of Ephesus, the stunning Library of Celsus reached its final form. More than just an architectural masterpiece meant to house over twelve thousand scrolls, it was a deeply personal monument.

Commissioned by the consul Tiberius Julius Aquila, this grand structure was built as a majestic mausoleum to honor his late father, Tiberius Julius Celsus Polemaeanus, a distinguished Roman senator and former governor of the province of Asia.

The library's façade is a masterpiece of optical illusions. It stands over sixteen meters high and features twelve magnificent Corinthian columns arranged in two stories. Between them, niches are carved into the masonry, originally holding statues of women representing wisdom, knowledge, intelligence, and virtue.

Socrates
3rd century AD
📍Ephesus Archaeological Museum

A marble portrait of one of history’s most influential philosophers. Socrates (469-399 BC) questioned everything and encouraged people to think for themselves. He left no writings, but his ideas survived through his students, especially Plato.

Discovered near the Scholastikia Baths in Ephesus, this Roman portrait was made several centuries after his death.

What makes the portrait particularly interesting is how Socrates was traditionally depicted: bald on top, with a broad face, snub nose and a thick beard. His appearance was often compared to that of a satyr.
Interestingly, Ephesus also preserves a famous fresco of the philosopher in its Terrace Houses.

If you’re visiting Ephesus, make sure to stop by the Archaeological Museum in nearby Selçuk. It’s just a short distance from the ancient city and well worth a visit!

Saint Luke, in addition to the strict ascetic life he led, his humility, his love for all people, his boundless charity, his unwavering faith in Christ and his piety in general, had great miraculous and healing power. The miracles he performed in his life are endless, but even after his death, hundreds and thousands of sick people came as pilgrims and suppliants to his tomb, from which myrrh flowed, and found their healing. But apart from the rest, the Saint also had prophetic ability. He had predicted many events, such as the invasion of the Bulgarians, the liberation of Crete from the occupation of the Arabs, his death, etc. Therefore, the appreciation and love that all Christians had for him was justified. In fact, the liberation of Crete, which he had predicted in 942 and which took place about 20 years later, in 961 AD by Nikephoros Phocas, contributed to increasing respect for his memory was celebrated throughout Christendom and especially in the reigning Constantinople. Rich donations were sent to the Monastery regularly. Thus, not only was the church of Agia Barbara finished, which is today dedicated to the Theotokos, but after a few years, in 1011, the second, larger church, the Catholicon, was built by the abbot Philotheos and his fellow monks Gabriel, Gregory, Peter and others. This church was dedicated to Saint Luke and, as we will see below, his reliquary was placed within it.

The monastery had many misfortunes and went through great difficulties. During the Frankish occupation in 1204, it suffered damage and lost many of its precious relics and wealth. The holy relic of Saint Luke was returned from the Vatican in 1986 and is today exhibited in the catholicon of the Holy Monastery.

Templon's decoration contains carved ornaments like rosettes and star,
Interlacing vegetal and arabesque patterns and animal figures that have not been securely identified. These ornaments belong to the broader decorative vocabulary of Middle Byzantine architectural sculpture

📍The Odeon of Herodes Atticus: A Monument of Roman Athens 🏛️☀️✨

Standing on the southern slopes of the Acropolis, the Odeon of Herodes Atticus is one of the most impressive surviving monuments of Roman Athens. Built around AD 161 by the wealthy Athenian benefactor Herodes Atticus in memory of his wife, Regilla, this magnificent theatre originally accommodated approximately 5,000 spectators. Its imposing three-storey stone façade, with its monumental arches and carefully constructed masonry, reflects the architectural grandeur of the Roman imperial period. Originally covered by an elaborate cedar roof, the Odeon hosted musical performances and cultural gatherings before suffering destruction in the third century AD. Extensively restored in the twentieth century, it continues to host performances beneath the Acropolis, connecting the artistic traditions of antiquity with those of modern Greece. The monument stands today on the southern slope of the Acropolis in Athens, Greece. 🎭🏛️
