🦁 IVAN ASEN | BULGARIA’S LIONS, PART 2

The protests helped secure permission for Terez and Masoud to leave Bulgaria. But adult lion Ivan Asen was told no.

There was still so much work to do. I returned to Australia for around a month while FOUR PAWS’ Yavor Gechev continued pushing for approval.

Ivan Asen was sick and weak. Yavor finally convinced the government that keeping this lion was no symbol of national pride. Eventually, they agreed to let him go.

Then came the forecast: a serious snowstorm was heading straight for the scheduled transport.

There’s never a dull day moving wild animals across international borders.

For me, this is the most emotional story of season one. Watching Ivan Asen’s transformation, and seeing what Yavor’s dedication made possible, was incredible. This lion’s story has stayed with me ever since.
