“Have you seen the ghost yet?” 👻

Not exactly the question you expect from a neighbor when you’ve just moved into your dream home.

But then again, this was no ordinary house…

When we first discovered her, she had stood empty for nearly three years. The once-grand grounds were overtaken by wild vegetation, and I must admit, there was something rather spooky and ominous about the place. There were even parts of the house we couldn’t access until after purchasing it!

Built in the early 1900s, our home belongs to a historic enclave along Florida’s Gulf Coast, envisioned by Dean Alvord, a prominent New York developer. The neighborhood was once romantically known as “The Riviera of the Sunny South.”

Over the past ten years, this house has revealed some fascinating stories, often through former residents and visitors.

One of my favorites came from a 1940s newspaper clipping about a former owner named Mary, who apparently left a substantial inheritance to her little white dog, Dusty.

Dusty was quite the neighborhood character, often spotted peeking through a second floor window.

Now imagine our astonishment when we discovered this!

We had moved into the house with our very own little white Havanese.

His name? Dusty.

I couldn’t make this up if I tried!

And then, of course, there is the matter of the ghost…

Just before closing on the property, a friend tried to discourage us from buying it.

“Everybody knows that house is haunted,” he warned.

Well, ten years later, I can tell you this house certainly has a personality of her own.

Whether it’s ghosts or simply a century’s worth of stories lingering within her walls, I’ve always believed old houses have a soul. They’ve witnessed generations of lives, celebrations, heartbreaks, and perhaps a few secrets.

So every Halloween, in honor of her majestic presence and wonderfully peculiar history, we dress her for the occasion, embracing the mystery and haunting beauty that come so naturally to her.

And I must say, I think she absolutely loves it. 🕯️✨
