A lot of people focus on the attack when using compression - which is absolutely right of course! But don't neglect the release - it's responsible for sustain, punch and feel which is very important on dynamic instruments like acoustic drums, vocals and guitars. The drum loop in this mixing tutorial was an acoustic loop played by a drummer. If I were using a drum loop composed of synthetic drum samples, my approach would be exactly the same: adjust the release to taste until it works for the kind of feel you want.
