A lot of people focus on the attack when using compression - which is absolutely right of course! But don't neglect the release - it's responsible for sustain, punch and feel which is very important on dynamic instruments like acoustic drums, vocals and guitars. The drum loop in this mixing tutorial was an acoustic loop played by a drummer. If I were using a drum loop composed of synthetic drum samples, my approach would be exactly the same: adjust the release to taste until it works for the kind of feel you want. ----- 👋 WANT FREE EXPERT FEEDBACK ON YOUR MIX? These vocal effects are great fun for mixing. Vocal effects are what I think take a mix from amateur into professional waters. Think how creative you can be with automation, granular effects, reverb, delay, modulation and more. That's why this is Part 1! I'll do another video with more tricks soon! ----- 👋 WANT FREE EXPERT FEEDBACK ON YOUR MIX? A clear, polished acoustic guitar sound in three steps. In this reel, I’m using three plugins, each with a specific job: ▫️ @fabfilter_plugins Pro-Q 4 to tidy up the low end, reduce muddiness and bring out clarity and detail. ▫️ @oeksound Soothe 3 to smooth out those resonances and ringing guitar notes that jump forward and make the guitar sound harsh. ▫️ @wavesaudio SSL G-Master Bus compression to even out the dynamics and help the guitars feel more controlled The aim is to keep the warmth and character of the acoustic guitar while giving it a smoother, more polished sound. 👋 I have preset packs for all of the plugins used in this video as well as for Soothe 2 and FabFilter Pro Q3. WHICH WAS YOUR FAVOURITE? Let me know in the comments! Mine was the LA-2A but I liked them all! Parallel compression offers the best of both worlds - a heavily compressed vocal mixed with the original dry vocal. And this often leads to punchy thick vocals that sound full and upfront. Adjust the attack and release to taste - a faster attack might cause a pumping squashed effect but it depends on the vocal and performance. ----- 👋 WANT FREE EXPERT FEEDBACK ON YOUR MIX? Muddy mixes - the enemy of every mix engineer I know! When multiple instruments occupy the same frequency space, you'll get frequency masking and build-up. I've done enough videos on frequency masking, so here is one on treating muddy build-up. Don't cut the same frequency on every single instrument or bus, vary it, and make sure you carve out space so each instrument has space to breathe in the mix. Make sure you pay close attention to 200-500Hz on every mix because it can be the reason why your mixes sound muddy and lack the definition and clarity of pro-level mixes. Or - run it through AubioMix.com and it will tell you why your mix is muddy and what to treat! ------- 👋 WANT FREE EXPERT FEEDBACK ON YOUR MIX? I’m always telling people how important the drums are in producing. They are the foundation of your track, they provide energy, dynamics, groove and transitions. So they require your utmost attention! Drum bus processing is something I do on nearly every mix with drums. It helps to make the drums sound more together and coherent. I hope you find these tips helpful, as always! ------- 👋 WANT FREE EXPERT FEEDBACK ON YOUR MIX? ‘Flat’ sounding mix is something that a lot of us have suffered from at some point. This tutorial depicts the techniques I would apply to bring a flat mix to life. In this example you will hear the effect of each plugin as I build it on top of the others, until we get a mix that is sounding much more vibrant, punchy and exciting. The techniques I’m doing in this video aren’t that radical or extreme - they are subtle enhancements that, together, make a huge impact. The plugins used in this videos are (in order): - @uaudio Ampex ATR-102 Mastering Recorder - @fabfilter_plugins Pro Q4 - @fabfilter_plugins Pro MB - @fabfilter_plugins Saturn 2 - @sslaudio SSL Fusion Stereo Image ——— 👋 Visit www.aubreywhitfield.com/store or the link in my bio where you will find: ◾️Online Courses in Producing and Mixing ◾️A collection of mixing and mastering masterclasses ◾️Preset Packs for your favourite plugin ◾️My mix template in Logic Pro, Ableton & FL Studio ◾️Pre-made Plugin Mixing Chains ◾️EQ frequency guides ◾️Some freebies! ◾️Plus more.... #musicproducer #beatmaker #studioflow #musicproduction #producerlife by @aubreywhitfield
If you record vocals at home, take these steps to help you get pro level results. Best advice I can give - record the vocal as dry as possible!! Even if it means putting a duvet over the mic! And whilst, I would always recommend a good condenser mic and audio interface, sometimes budget is the only option. So follow these steps to help you out! ----- 👋 WANT FREE EXPERT FEEDBACK ON YOUR MIX?
