Ottawa has committed up to that amount to buy into AI company Cohere. But when Vassy Kapelos asked Minister Evan Solomon what percentage Canadians would own, he wouldn’t disclose it. Commercial sensitivity. Sound familiar? That’s what’s they said with Volkswagen and many others.
Look at the record of federal and provincial governments backing companies with public money:
🔴 Northvolt: Quebec lost $270 million invested in the Swedish parent company. (globalnews.ca)
🔴 Lion Electric: Quebec lost approximately $140 million, according to The Canadian Press. (montreal.citynews.ca)
🔴 Recyclage Carbone Varennes: Quebec’s $117 million equity stake was lost, alongside further losses on public loans. The assets sold for just $17.5 million. (montreal.citynews.ca)
🔴 Medicago: Ottawa lost a $150 million non-refundable vaccine advance. (search.open.canada.ca)
🔴 Novavax: After Canada terminated its vaccine agreement, the company booked US$575.7 million from previously recorded payments and liabilities as revenue. It refunded US$28 million. (sec.gov)
And they get away with it? Vast? “Ok”. It’s not ok. Disclose the deal or you don’t get to use our money.

Serious question.. When a company is receiving Canadian Tax dollars ie. 1 million +, is there any oversight, reconciliation, itemized billing that the company could provide...or is it that the bigger number, the less oversight there is 🤔
