You’ve probably heard the phrase, “It’s not what you know, but who you know.” I’ve come to believe there’s a little more truth to that than we sometimes realize. Knowledge, education, and experience can take you far, but the relationships you cultivate along the way can take you places you never imagined.
Think about how extraordinary it is that somewhere in the world, there’s someone you’ve never met who shares a dream similar to yours, has overcome a hardship you understand, or possesses a skill that could change the direction of your life. Different countries, different languages, different upbringings, yet somehow our stories and aspirations intersect. Sometimes a stranger becomes a friend, a friend becomes family, and a conversation becomes the beginning of something neither person could have created alone.
I’ve started to realize that life isn’t simply about how far you can go by yourself, but how many people you can bring along as you go. There is no shortage of room for others to succeed. Someone else’s accomplishments don’t take away from your own; if anything, witnessing another person reach their dreams should remind us of what’s possible for ourselves.
Every person we meet carries an entire world of experiences, knowledge, connections, and possibilities that we may never have considered. When we approach people with genuine curiosity, generosity, and an open mind, we’re not simply expanding our own horizons. We’re creating a community that extends beyond borders, cultures, and circumstances.
So to all my friends scattered across the world, keep meeting people, keep sharing your stories, keep celebrating one another, and never underestimate the impact of a genuine connection. You may be the person who helps someone else get one step closer to their dream, just as someone you haven’t met yet may help you get closer to yours.
Perhaps that’s one of the beautiful things about being human: we were never meant to experience everything alone.
Build relationships without keeping score. Celebrate without comparison. Plant seeds without expecting to harvest them. Give to give, not give to get.
