hours agoI have one annually unfortunately! +1 for sedation — in the US it isn't an option. My other note is to continue drinking electrolytes afterwards — after my last one I didn't rehydrate sufficiently afterwards and had to go to the ER for a drip. Yuck.
hours agoThank you so much for your post, it's really helped me as I'm trying to keep myself calm before first ever colonoscopy. x
hours agoI found the bum wees so satisfying! Never felt so cleaned out in my life 🙈😅
hours agoThe shittest part is when you have celiac disease, lactose intolerance, histamine intolerance & haven’t been able to eat solids for a while & nothing on the low res diet sheets is possible for you to ingest… and you end up with a few days on just sugar water. Completely brutal 😭
hours agoHave had a LOT of these done. Lots find using a straw for the prep helps too. Green jelly and lemonade during the prep and take a packed lunch for afterwards. 🙂
hours agoAs a colonoscopy pro (self claimed title) been having them very regularly for 15 years now... 1. Things have improved drastically over the years in all aspects, a lot of the horror stories are from times gone by. 2. Your experience will drastically vary depending on why you're having the procedure and what state your bowel is in. A routine scope when you're relatively healthy won't be that bad. A scope because you are in an active disease state or you have lots of scarring from disease will be significantly more painful. My bowels are now in a permenantlty bad way from inflammation and scarring and usually open sores - it's one of the most painful procedures I have, BUT that is NOT the norm! 3. The prep will vary, overall it's improved a lot over the years, it's much more gentle now. If you have one and don't get on with it, next time request something different. If you're chronically constipated ask for an enema on top that you can do the day before you start the prep, or the morning if depending on your prep schedule - that will help greatly. 4. Being nervous will make everything 10x worse, your pain receptors will be firing up, your body will be tense making it harder to get the scope round, and it will decrease the effectiveness of the sedation. So TRY to relax, I know it's not that simple, but do what you can to relax focus on other things, do some breathing, ask for music in the procedure room, chat away to the nurses, whatever helps you. 5. DON'T SKIP IT!!! Colonoscopiee can detect so many things before they get out of control, if you've been advised to have one then just be brave and get through it, you'll survive and you might not if you skip it. X
hours agoI had to drink a pint … twice So salty .. even writing about it makes me gag. A smaller amount and then a liquid of choice sounds so much better . Will try and remember picolax if I ever have the misfortune of needing one again… wish they could make the prep easier for people
hours agoMix the prep stuff with fruit Squash and drink it through a straw placed right at back of mouth. Can't taste it as much like that. It was the large volume that I struggled with.
hours agoThank you for revealing to me the correct spelling of picolax! Years ago I had a colleague go through this prep and I misheard picolax as ‘pickle axe’ and I had no idea what she was talking about and I couldn’t Google it because I had mondegreened it into ‘pickle axe’. You have resolved my curiosity! ❤️
hours agoAdditional top tip……. Don’t eat mushrooms 4 days out, inexplicably there was still some ‘in’ there, which caused great hilarity when an almost whole slice was spotted on the camera…….. also drink the prep through a straw then you don’t have to taste it.
