Funded by the new Northern Illinois Transit Authority, an additional 46 CTA buses are now equipped with smart camera technology to improve safety, reliability, and accessibility for people riding buses and bikes.

$The Automated Bus Lane Enforcement (ABLE) cameras, mounted on CTA buses, enforce a variety of traffic infractions, including parking and standing violations in bus stops, bus lanes, and bike lanes. This technology - improves safety for people walking, biking, and using transit - ensures bus stops are accessible for wheelchair users and other people who are mobility-impaired - enhances the speed, reliability, and efficiency of public transit$

Six buses were equipped with ABLE technology at the program's launch in October 2025.

Now, a total of 52 CTA buses operate with the ABLE camera system.

Over 140,000 warnings and violations have been issued since the launch of the program (October 2025).
- 84% of those did not repeat the offense
-40% of violations were for bus lane and bus stop violations.

A total of 52 CTA buses are now operating with Automated Bus Lane Enforcement (ABLE) technology as a part of the City of Chicago's Smart Streets pilot program.
This expansion allows us to be better equipped to deter illegal parking in bus- and bike-only lanes and bus stops, directly addressing critical safety, accessibility, and bus service delay issues that impact tens of thousands of riders every day.
