Complex Music

Prodigy’s music taste went far beyond the gritty Queensbridge sound that made him a hip-hop legend 🙏

Born into a musical family, the late Mobb Deep rapper grew up surrounded by everything from jazz and soul to reggae and rock. His mother was a member of The Crystals, while his grandfather was a Jazz Hall of Famer, influences that occasionally found their way into Mobb Deep’s music.

In honor of what would have been his 52nd birthday, we’re revisiting Prodigy’s 2012 interview with Complex, where he broke down his 25 favorite albums of all time. From Nas’ ‘Illmatic’ and Snoop Dogg’s ‘Doggystyle’ to Bob Marley, Marvin Gaye, Kanye West and Rihanna, his picks reveal the wide-ranging influences behind one of rap’s most distinctive voices.
