On my album “RULED BY THE MOON” I talk a lot about being chosen, which sounds cuteeee when I sing it, but in reality being chosen—to follow God’s word, to break generational curses, to pursue purpose to the fullest extent— in my experience, is deeply lonely and characterized by immense suffering. Allah could fill an ocean with the tears I’ve cried pursuing the path to my destiny. I remember when I first started singing like 10 years ago, I’d have these insane tantrums where I felt suicidal because I couldn’t express myself through singing the way I knew I was meant to, my voice felt blocked and I wanted to sing so bad I felt I’d die if I couldn’t. 7hamdullilah I literally can now ☺️ and always improving and I’m grateful for that and try to use my gift every single day. I’ve been turning to scripture so much lately to make sense of my life—the pain, the loneliness, the never fitting in anywhere, the mountain to success I’ve been climbing for years but still feels like I haven’t moved at all. “Oh Maryam! Surely Allah has selected you, purified you, and chosen you over all women of the world” (Quran 3:42). Maryam (َلَيْهَا السَّلَام) was literally alone under a tree in the worst pain imaginable in a situation that made no worldly sense and had to trust God’s will, His word and His plan. She was a true woman of God, and that suffering was the purification that made her worthy and able to steward God’s blessings for her life, of becoming the most famous and influential woman in the history of the world.
