Before his death in 1924, Vladimir Lenin dictated a political testament in which he warned about Joseph Stalin’s growing influence and recommended that he be removed from his position as General Secretary of the Communist Party. Lenin expressed concern that Stalin had accumulated too much authority, particularly through his control over party appointments and internal affairs. He also criticised Stalin’s behaviour, describing him as excessively rude and impatient when dealing with fellow party members. Lenin feared that these characteristics, combined with his increasing power, could threaten the party’s stability and lead to abuses of authority. Rather than demanding Stalin’s complete removal from political life, Lenin proposed replacing him as General Secretary with someone more patient, respectful and willing to cooperate with other senior officials. His recommendation was intended to prevent too much power from becoming concentrated in the hands of one individual. Lenin’s testament also assessed other prominent Bolsheviks, including Leon Trotsky, whom he regarded as exceptionally capable but overly confident and inclined toward administrative arrogance. His wider concern was that personal rivalries and disagreements among senior leaders could divide the Communist Party following his death. Although Lenin’s warnings were discussed within the party leadership, Stalin retained his position and eventually consolidated his control over the Soviet Union, making the testament one of the most significant documents in the history of Soviet leadership struggles. 📜🇷🇺
