4 hours agoI’ve been thinking about this for months. I’ve been a pilot since 2005. I managed a flight school, taught and competed in aerobatics. I worked for one of the world’s preeminent air show performers as his ferry pilot. My life and my ambition all resided in general aviation. It wasn’t until 2023 that I started flying jets first at a regional and now at a premier fractional operator. Perhaps it’s a combination of operating in those environments, the learning curve that comes with it, and of course becoming a parent BUT I would be a fool if I discounted the constant exposure to accidents through social media as a significant factor in just how much I have turned away from general aviation. If I only listened to what Facebook, Instagram or YouTube is telling me, flying a piston airplane is one of the most dangerous things I can do. Now, I have thousands of safe, accident free piston powered hours to argue against that but it is a mental block to work through lately as social media surrounding aviation has gotten more and more macabre. There has always been content concerning safety, and learning but everything these days seems to be presented within the framing of a fatal accident.
20 hours agoIt is a shame to what it’s come to on social media regarding content and aviation tragedies. There isn’t a need to explain, I think the other comment Fly With Bruno covered it well. If anything for accident content and actually wanting to be informed, I would watch channels like blancolirio where Juan does an excellent job at explaining what occurred, possible circumstances that could’ve led to the accident, and what the NTSB may look for. The tragedy in Florida is just another occurrence where this can be seen, and having a 20 year old completely qualified female pilot has exacerbated this two-fold. I feel nothing but anger and sadness for her family and it shouldn’t be normalized. I commend you for making this post and there should be more people like you educating the public who have no idea how aviation works. It truly is a cruel and unforgiving world.
a day agoI see the point your making but I don’t have a problem with it because it’s something I can learn from in every accident to be a safer pilot. If you’re simply worried about small creators reporting an accident right after it happened that is literally no different than a news station making a report on it. There will always be misinformation to some level no matter how much you don’t like it. I’m not against your message but it seems like a gray area between people hating on people who create videos on aviation accidents and early reporting.
a day agoI’ll be the first to comment. Monetizing Aviation tragedy is a wide-spread disease on social media, and it has real-life implications—including adding to the pain of families and friends of the people involved. It’s a cancer. And I have a profound disrespect for 99% of the creators that succumbed to this practice. Fortunately, that are a handful that at least do it responsibly, without speculating and, most importantly, without judging or exposing the victims. Thank you for posting this video.
