For nearly 20 years, California has drawn a line between subsidizing pay for people in front of the camera and the workforce behind it.

Its refusal to offset a production’s salary for, say, Tom Cruise, has made it an outlier among the 39 states that offer production incentives and is probably the biggest reason why it’s losing its grip as the filming capital of the world.

The idiosyncrasy to California’s film and TV tax credit program has been leveraged by competing states and foreign countries to coax productions into leaving. Now, Gov. Gavin Newsom is trying to fight back. On Monday, Newsom announced another major expansion to the program that, if passed, would increase the annual credit from $750 million to $1 billion and allow a portion of pay for actors, directors and producers to qualify, among other changes.

Some songs don't need electricity to send chills down your spine. All they need is a voice, a guitar, and someone capable of turning darkness into something almost sacred.

In 2017, Marilyn Manson delivered an extraordinary acoustic performance of “Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)”, accompanied by Tyler Bates. Far removed from the industrial aggression and provocative energy of his original version, this interpretation transformed the song into something haunting, intimate, and almost religious.

With a stage setting that felt like a dark ceremony, Manson stripped the song of its usual armour. His voice, his presence, and that solitary guitar made every word feel heavier, every silence more uncomfortable.

It wasn't simply an acoustic cover. It was a reminder that dreams can become nightmares, that desire often hides fear, and that not everything we chase is worth having.

Sometimes, true horror doesn't need to scream. It only needs to whisper.

And Marilyn Manson knew exactly how to do it.
