Let's talk about a lesser-known position - the orthopneic position! This is also known as the tripod position.
You'll have your client lean forward and prop their elbows up on the bedside table or their knees - add pillows to make it more comfortable!
This position is ideal for an acute COPD or asthma exacerbation, or anytime a client is having trouble breathing.
Sometimes, clients having a hard time catching their breath will naturally do this. When they are leaning forward with their hands on their knees we often call this 'tripoding' ๐
The tripod position can also be used when a client needs a lumbar puncture and can't tolerate the preferred lateral or fetal positioning.
