@thejasminebrand : Democrat Abdul El-Sayed is making history after winning Michigan’s U.S. Senate race, becoming the first Muslim elected to serve in the United States Senate.

The 42-year-old former public health official defeated Republican Mike Rogers, a former congressman, in the November 3 midterm elections, according to projections from the Associated Press and ABC News.

El-Sayed will replace retiring Democratic Sen. Gary Peters, keeping the Michigan Senate seat under Democratic control.

A Michigan native, El-Sayed previously led public health departments in Detroit and Wayne County. He first entered statewide politics in 2018 when he unsuccessfully ran for Michigan governor.

His Senate campaign focused on lowering everyday costs, expanding healthcare access through Medicare for All, and reducing corporate influence in politics.

The historic victory follows a contentious campaign in which El-Sayed faced criticism over his progressive policies, opposition to U.S. military aid to Israel, and his Muslim faith.

El-Sayed also accused President Donald Trump and other Republicans of using Islamophobic rhetoric against him during the race.

His victory represents a historic milestone for Muslim Americans, who have previously served in the U.S. House of Representatives but never in the Senate.

El-Sayed is expected to take office in January 2027.
