NICOSIA — The Cyprus Peace and Solidarity Movement has called on the European Commission to intervene over settlement and demographic alteration in the occupied areas of Cyprus. The movement submitted a letter in Brussels on October 6 during meetings with Commission representatives. According to a written statement by Şener Elcil, İzzet İzcan, and Murat Kanatlı, the letter was addressed to European Commission Executive Vice President Raffaele Fitto. The movement argues that Turkey’s policies of settlement, assimilation, and integration threaten the survival of the Turkish Cypriot community and alter its political will. It also criticizes the Republic of Cyprus for failing to bring cases concerning settlement before international courts. The letter cites figures relating to the demographic situation in the occupied areas, including 951,356 active mobile phone users, 228,938 household electricity meters, and 210,121 registered “voters” in 2023. The movement questions the reliability of demographic figures released by the occupying authorities. Finally, it calls on the EU to help reunify Cyprus through a bi-zonal, bi-communal federation with a single sovereignty, a single citizenship, and a single international personality. 🔗 get the full story at thenationalherald.com — link in bio. From Flintshire to Leicestershire, Devon to Wiltshire, Reform contested four by-elections yesterday. 💪 They lost all four… 😬 Four contests. Four defeats. That’s fifteen out of fifteen lost in the past three weeks. They thought they were unstoppable. But Reform are not inevitable. 😉 Have a great weekend!
Parvez Parwaz, a 72-year-old former journalist and social activist who sought legal action over a speech delivered by Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath in 2007, died in Gorakhpur District Jail on Sunday while serving a life sentence in a separate gangrape case. Gorakhpur District Jail officials said Parwaz had several health problems, including high blood pressure and diabetes. He reportedly developed breathing difficulties late Saturday night and was taken to the district hospital, where he died during treatment at around 2:50 am. Parwaz had been in jail since September 2018 after a woman accused him and another man of gangrape. In July 2020, a district court sentenced him to life imprisonment in the case. His death has brought renewed attention to his long legal battle over a speech delivered by Adityanath, who was then the Bharatiya Janata Party’s MP from Gorakhpur. Parwaz Recorded Adityanath’s 2007 Speech On January 27, 2007, Parwaz was passing near Gorakhpur railway station when he saw Adityanath addressing a gathering near a statue of Maharana Pratap. The city was tense following a clash during a Muharram procession in which a Hindu youth was injured and later died. Parwaz recorded the speech with his camera. Adityanath was quoted as saying, “In the coming time, for the b!ood of one Hindu, we will not get an FIR registered against the administration, but will instead have at least 10 such people k!lled.” The speech was followed by violence in parts of Gorakhpur. Reports said at least two people were killed and property worth crores of rupees was damaged during the riots. Parwaz later sought legal action over the speech, alleging that Adityanath had incited violence. The allegations were contested, and the legal proceedings continued for years. The campaign to bring cars back to State Street through a voter referendum reached the minimum 5,400 signatures needed to potentially place the issue on the ballot during a future election. The Committee to Reopen State Street — backed by SIMA Corporation President Jim Knell — announced that the initiative gathered 6,000 signatures in just over three weeks, and the petition was submitted to the city clerk on Wednesday, October 14. For the past several weeks, paid signature gatherers were spotted outside grocery stores and shopping centers in the city, asking city residents to join in the referendum. The city clerk will now verify the signatures, and the City Council would then decide whether to repeal the ordinance or put the matter before voters during a future election. This is one of two potential referendums on City Council decisions; another petition against the city’s recently passed rent stabilization ordinance is currently gathering signatures citywide. 📸: Elaine Sanders (@elaine_sanders) / Santa Barbara Independent
