Soviet nuclear war-themed posters published in the 1970s and 80s.

The prospect of nuclear war became an increasingly prominent theme in Soviet posters and cartoons in the 1970s and 80s as tensions rose between the US and USSR. Many of the posters emphasised the apocalyptic consequences of nuclear war.

The first here is a famous one titled ‘Evolution?’ Designed by Khoren Zavenovich Akopyan and published ca. 1982, it shows weapons ‘evolving’ from the primitive arrow to the nuclear missile and then back to a primitive axe. Akopyan was an Armenian artist who designed the poster for an international poster competition held in Moscow, ‘The Poster in the Struggle for Peace, Security and Cooperation’. The poster was reproduced by ‘Plakat’, the publishing house of the Central Committee of the Communist Party, in 1985.

The second is titled ‘No to war!’ and shows a nuclear bomb striking earth, with graves shown in the tip. The poster was designed by Anatoly Leonidovich Braz and published ca. 1979.

The third is titled ‘We must not allow nuclear war!’ and shows an ’N’ and the broken globe forming a skull and crossbones. Published in 1983 and designed by Semyon Raev.

The fourth is titled ‘Let the atom serve peace, not war!’ Split into two panels, with the top showing a city thriving off nuclear energy and its ruins depicted below. Designed jointly by Miron Lukyanov and Vasily Ostrovsky, published in 1974.

The fifth is titled ‘Can people really do without us?!’ and shows two distraught nuclear missiles puzzled by a sign reading ‘No to missiles!’ It was designed by Boris Semyonov and published by the ‘Fighting Pencil’ graphic collective. The short verse at the bottom reads: ‘The planet’s fate lies in people’s hands. The world declares: “Away with missiles!” They must all be eliminated - the Earth must remain unharmed!

The sixth is titled ‘We say no to nuclear madness!’ and shows a fist smashing an atom bomb. Published 1983 and designed by one ‘Y. Tarasova’.
