Trees are epicenters of bacteria, fungi, and other microscopic organisms—some of which can enter the environment with wind, rain, and other natural forces.¹ Researchers are now studying whether the microbial diversity of forest air might help explain some of the health benefits that people feel when spending time underneath a canopy. Beyond exposing us to a tapestry of potentially beneficial microbes, spending time among trees and other greenery is known to reduce psychological stress. Yet more reason to seek out the greens, yellows, and oranges of the canopy this season.
