Americans have spoken – and democracy has worked. A strong turnout, a clear result, checks and balances doing their job.

I hope the new Congress will stand firmly with Ukraine against Russia’s war of aggression. Ukraine’s fight is our common fight for liberty and justice – the values American democracy has embodied for 250 years.

And I hope this vote re-opens the door to multilateralism. No country, however powerful, can solve today’s crises alone – from shrinking trust in institutions and the climate catastrophe to the cost of living and polarised societies. PACE stands ready to work with colleagues from the US Congress.

Democracy is not a spectator sport. Yesterday, America played.

(The US holds observer status with the Council of Europe.)

Ukrainian children are not guests at the edge of our society. They sit in our classrooms. They play in our parks. They are part of our future.
And they carry heavy burdens. A new language. A new school system. New friendships to build. And every morning the same fear: is my father still alive? Is my brother? Is my grandmother, back home under Russian bombs?

Today I spoke during the Meeting of the Parliamentary Network on the Situation of the Children of Ukraine “Ukrainian Children in Europe: Protection, Education and Child Safety” on current issue facing Ukrainian children abroad and how PACE addresses them.

What future is left for us?

At #CoE_WFD Petra Bayr, Alain Berset, Andrej Plenković and Guy Ryder delivered a clear message: democracy must rebuild trust, resist disinformation, and deliver real results for people, especially young people.

From democratic resilience to youth participation and Europe’s future, the call was clear: the future of democracy is ours to shape.

Imagine democracy had an emergency button.
A big red button. Behind glass.
With a sign: Break glass in case of emergency.
Would you press it today?

In my opening address for the World Forum for Democracy 2026, I emphasized that democracy is not something we can take for granted; it must be actively defended every day, and young people must have a decisive voice in shaping its future.

Youth participation is key to a democratic future. It was a pleasure to meet youth representatives at the ‘Youth Shaping Democracy’ conference in the Hungarian Parliament and hear their perspectives.

I also welcomed the opportunity to meet with the speaker of the Hungarian parliament, @forsthofferagnesoldala on Hungary’s future in Europe and the importance of close cooperation with the Council of Europe.

How can women parliamentary leaders advance equality?

At the European Conference of Presidents of Parliament in Rome, 13 women parliamentary leaders shared their ideas and commitments on a collective digital wall.

From inspiring girls to become future leaders to addressing challenges posed by social media and changing attitudes in society, their contributions highlight different paths towards a fairer, more equal and inclusive future.

“This is not about making a declaration. It is about sharing experience, ideas and commitments.”

— Petra Bayr, PACE President
