Yuki Matsui’s 1.83 ERA doesn’t tell the whole story of his 2026 season

• 4.18 FIP — 2.35 runs higher than his ERA
• 3.03 expected ERA
• 13.8% walk rate — roughly one in every seven batters
• 36 walks in 64 innings
• 1.89 strikeouts per walk

Matsui still had a decent season, but these numbers suggest he wasn’t quite as dominant as that ERA makes him look. His ability to limit hard contact helped, but the walks remain a concern heading into next season. Matsui definitely was fortunate to have our defense behind him. Especially Ty France.

Padres are opting out of Nick Pivetta’s $14 million dollar option for 2027. It is important to note Michael King said earlier this year that “Nick better be here” during his contract singing press conference.

Will the Padres resign him on a cheaper deal?

Wandy Peralta opts in to his 2027 contract option and will make $4.45 million this year. (He will make nothing if there is a lockout)

Here is my San Diego Padres Offseason Plan!

NOTE: this would have us staying over the CBT limit, meaning this assumes that the signings are prior to the lockout, OR if the cap is above 300 mil or won’t happen.

The San Diego Padres and Ty France reportedly have mutual interest in agreeing on a deal that keeps France in San Diego.

However, nothing is imminent and France could very well enter free agency.

Honestly it’s just a yearly thing. Padres start the season awful -> heat up in the middle of the year -> give us hope and we go all in during the trade deadline -> we fall short in the post season… then we 🔁

I’d rather have a team that is smart and spends less like the Brewers, than a team that spends a ton and ships off talent every year because they aren’t patient. We need to learn from the Brewers and how they operate business. Hold prospects, sign good deals, develop talent, then extend that talent if they prove to be good.

It’s time to make big changes, and it starts in the front office.

Jake Cronenworth keeps the Padres alive with a go ahead Solo HR in the 5th! Xander Bogaerts came up huge with a run scored on an Error in the 6th by Cooper Pratt which turned out to be a huge insurance run. Bogaerts also turned an unassisted double play to end the game with Michael King coming in to earn the save as Mason Miller was on the Paternity List. by @padreswave
