We’re launching Sijil ✍🏼 — our monthly membership community sustaining 63 years of Palestinian scholarship, archives, and voices.
The word SIJIL (سجل) means record in Arabic. We chose it deliberately.

For decades, IPS has dedicated itself to preserving and expanding the record of Palestine—documenting its rich history, nurturing its intellectual life, honoring the struggles of its people, and amplifying voices too often suppressed, distorted, or ignored elsewhere.

Join SIJIL in seconds. Become a monthly member and help us protect the record and build the future.

Sliman Mansour brought Jerusalem to life, alleviating it into the realm of the mythic through his now-iconic depictions of the city. Mansour created a new visual language that became embedded in Palestinian collective consciousness, with miniatures and replicas of his formidable pieces strewn across Jerusalemite interiors and beyond.

In this Jerusalem Quarterly piece, Tina Sherwell takes us through Sliman Mansour’s journey, foregrounding pivotal moments that transformed both his art and life.

”The construction of the image of the landscape of the homeland, then, is conditioned through the dialectical processes of the experience of estrangement and exile, memories and loss.

What we witness in Mansour’s oeuvre over the decades are these recurring themes that have contoured his depiction of Jerusalem and the Palestinian landscape in particular; themes that are continually embedded in his paintings and later in the mud works, as is the pervasive sense of loss and melancholy.”

🔥 NEW ISSUE: Journal of Palestine Studies 219 🔥

In this robust issue of the Journal of Palestine Studies, contributors enrich our understanding of the Palestinian experience—past, present, and future.

Special to this issue is a two-part series titled “Essays on Shami Futures, introduced by Sami Hermez and featuring eight essays that emerged from a 2025 workshop where scholars and writers from across Bilad al-Sham imagined a future liberated from Zionism.

Together, they join the long tradition of Palestinians offering readers “a code for collective Shami liberation, as well as lessons to imagine the way out of the darkness of Zionist genocide in Palestine and settler-colonial violence and expansion in Bilad al-Sham.”

In Gratitude and Solidarity,
The JPS Editorial Team

Samah Zaqout was eight in 2008 when Israel bombed her family’s home in Gaza. She spent the next decade moving between rented houses and finally went back to a rebuilt home, until Israel destroyed it again. Now her youngest sister is eight, carrying her teddy bear from tent to tent.

Samah is the author of zine “In the Depth of Gaza” published by Coastal Lines Press (@zinesfromgaza) and featured in “Aquí Seguimos: A Legacy of Love and a History of Resistance,” (@aquiseguimosart) an exhibition on art under annihilation and on solidarity between Palestine and Mexico that we supported in Baltimore last month.

Senior lecturers, Nicola Perugini and Shaira Vadasaria discuss the University of Edinburgh’s racial entanglement with the British Empire and settler colonialism in Palestine through the figure of its former chancellor, Arthur James Balfour. The authors call for academic institutions to interrogate, reckon with, and assume accountability for their historical implication in imperialism and Zionist settler-colonial violence.

Seventy years ago, on 1 November 1956, Israeli forces began the first Israeli military occupation of the Gaza Strip during the Suez War, capturing Rafah, Gaza City, and Khan Yunis in the first days of November.

Israeli forces withdrew in March 1957, but returned to occupy Gaza in June 1967. The occupation continued until Israel's 2005 disengagement, when it evacuated its settlements and withdrew its permanently stationed ground forces. Israel nevertheless retained control over key aspects of Gaza's borders, airspace, and maritime access.

Today, Israel is expanding its military-controlled territory beyond the so-called Yellow Line in Gaza. Shifting boundaries and expanding zones of Israeli military control show that Israel is using the ongoing genocide, the devastation of Gaza, and international inaction to consolidate its control over the Strip and reimpose an even more extensive military occupation.

While people dress up as monsters and line up for horror movies and haunted houses today, some have no choice but to live through horrors that aren't fiction, and have no escape.

Thirty-five years ago, the Madrid Conference opened a new chapter in what was presented as a path toward a negotiated resolution of the Palestine question. The 1991 conference marked the first international meeting in which Palestinians formally participated alongside Israelis, followed by the 1993 Oslo Agreement and its promise of interim self-government leading toward Palestinian statehood.

Thirty-five years after Madrid, Palestine has not moved toward greater territorial continuity or independence. Instead, Palestinians continue to face genocide, dispossession, forced displacement, settlement expansion, and the fragmentation and shrinking of their land.

This Highlight from PalQuest examines the Madrid Conference and Oslo Agreement, the framework they established, and what followed in the decades since.

How did Zionist lobby groups mobilize humanitarianism to rally global support for the immigration required to populate and consolidate the settler-colonial state of Israel?

Pietro Stefanini argues that the humanitarianization of the Jewish settler-immigrant subject was a constituent part of the Zionist eliminatory system of dispossession in Palestine.
